Conversations at 4.5

We're talking about breakfast food, and she's asking me about the special breakfast we make for Christmas morning.

LA: It's called monkey bread.
MC: Does it taste like monkeys?

***************

It's bedtime, and we're talking about her day. She's telling me about a friend from preschool.

MC: I love you more than I love Wilson. I love you a dozen. I only love him a hundred.

**************

We are reading a Thanksgiving book, and at the end the book asks the reader "What are you thankful for?"

MC: I'm thankful for Wilson, my sister, Elmo, and I'm a little bit thankful for books with flaps.

***************

MC: When I saw Rameses at the pepper rally today, he was wearing a black shirt!
LA, feigning surprise: Whaaatttt?
MC: I know! Crazy, right?!

Thanksgiving 2016

We had a low-key Thanksgiving this year, for GL's first Thanksgiving. We planned to have two other families for a lunch time meal, but one family had to cancel the day before due to a kid with a fever. So we ended up with four adults and four kids (2 preschoolers, 2 infants) for our potluck feast.

We did manage to snap a few pictures of our first Thanksgiving as a family of four before our friends arrived.

GL is wearing the same outfit that MC wore on her first Thanksgiving!

MC wrote everyone's names on place cards for our meal.

BD ended up at the kids' table by MC's request.

Pictures!

Here are some recent pictures of our girls. These are from October 2016 - MC is 4 years old; GL is 2 months old.

We walked over to get a neighborhood friend to come for a play date. They hadn't seen each other in a while, so they held hands all the way back to our house.

E's mama sent slice-and-bake cookies with him for snacks during the play date, so they anxiously awaited the completion of the baking process.

MC is really into drawing pictures and writing her name lately.

We decorated and delivered fall-themed cupcakes for all our neighborhood friends.

I took both girls with me to do early voting this year.

Sleeping baby snuggles are the best!

Pumpkin head!

Bundled up and cozy for our chilly morning walk in the stroller.

She is trying her hardest to become a hand/finger sucker. I am trying my hardest to encourage the paci over her hand.

Hello from tummy time!

Sweet, smiling girl - 11 weeks old in this picture.

Cutest Pumpkin(s) in the Patch

During MC's first fall season, back in 2012, we got these great pictures of her sitting in a pumpkin. So we thought it would be cute to try and recreate the same photos with GL. However, MC was about 8 weeks older than GL at this point during her first fall, so she was more stable and able to sit up better.

GL was...not very thrilled about sitting in a pumpkin.

Perhaps a more appropriate title would be Unhappiest Pumpkin in the Patch! (Don't worry - the entire photo shoot lasted about 6 minutes, so the torture didn't go on very long.)

This is about the best non-screaming picture we got -- doesn't she look thrilled?!

Having Big Sister near (and paci in her mouth) helped her to be a little more okay with the situation...

Even More Fall Fun

When MC and I were at the pumpkin patch this fall, we picked out a white pumpkin to use for a craft project idea that I had seen on Pinterest. One afternoon after preschool, the girls and I got everything set up on the driveway to work on our pumpkin project. (And MC's Ryder figurine from Paw Patrol helped, too - of course!)

We glued crayons to the top of our white pumpkin...

and then used the hair dryer to melt the wax and let it drip down the sides of the pumpkin. Turned out pretty cool!

Another one of MC's favorite fall activities is for BD to blow up a big leaf pile for her to jump in. She has been waiting anxiously all fall for her first leaf pile. Finally last weekend there were enough leaves on the ground, and she had a blast running, jumping, throwing leaves!

More Fall Fun

One weekend MC and I spent some "Mommy and MC time" at a local pumpkin patch, where we went on a hayride and picked out some pumpkins to carve and decorate.

That same weekend, she and I also went to a kids' orchestra performance by the Chapel Hill Philharmonia. It was MC's first time seeing a live orchestra, and she was very interested and had lots of questions.

NC State Fair 2016

The NC State Fair was held a few weeks ago, so we took a family trip to go check out all the fun. We have taken MC to the fair every year since she was born, and we are hoping to continue that tradition with GL. We love the fair!

This year MC was old enough to remember our trip last year, so she was very excited to see the animals and ride some rides.

MC loved seeing this mama cow nursing her baby.

Our first ride was the carousel, which has always been MC's favorite.

Surprise! GL was there, too! It was her first carousel ride!

We also rode the giant ferris wheel. You can see the entire fair grounds from the top.

Family selfie on the ferris wheel!

After the ferris wheel, MC wanted to ride some of the kiddie rides - a first for this year! Last year she was not tall enough for most of them and also didn't want to ride alone. But this year she rode a couple with BD and a couple by herself! GL and I found a shady spot for a milk break while they rode rides for a while.

We ate lots of yummy fair food throughout the day - including a hollowed out pineapple that was filled with rice, pineapple, chicken, and grilled veggies. And we ate some fried food, too - of course!

We met Casey the Cardinal, the NC State Fair mascot, although MC did not want to get close enough to him for a picture. We checked out the huge tractors that were on display and marveled at both the size of the tires and the size of the price tags!

After the tractors, we made a quick swing through the flower and garden show, at MC's request - she remembered that from last year, too. And then we headed home after a full day of fair fun.

GL is Three Months Old!

November 10, 2016

GL turned 3 months old earlier this week. She has started to give us real, big gummy smiles and even has had a few chuckles (mostly for MC) this month. She "talks" to us by cooing and blowing raspberries and spit bubbles. She especially loves to try to join in our conversations whenever we're all talking around her.

She has discovered both her hands and feet and likes to watch them wiggle and wave. Her hands are still usually fisted, but her movements are smoother and less of the newborn jerks and flailing. Her head, neck, and trunk muscles are obviously stronger now - when we hold her up she can hold herself upright for quite a while before getting tired and relaxing against our body.

She is tracking objects well with her eyes and turns her head to follow the sound of a voice. She will stare at a toy when we hold it up for her but is not yet reaching out to grab anything.

And perhaps the best news of all: In the last week, the spit-ups have reduced in number and frequency which is definitely a welcome change!

 Two Month Info

Stats
12lb (on our home scale)
height unknown until 4 month appt

Feeding
Still breastfeeding and that continues to go well. She usually nurses at least twice during the night, and on demand throughout the day.

Sleeping
She is sleeping in the swing in our bedroom at night. She is generally ready for bed by about 9pm and awake in the morning between 7-8. Her longest stretch of sleep has been around 6 hours, but most often it is 4-5 hours. Usually her first stretch of sleep is the longest, then after she wakes to nurse the first time she's up every 2-3 hours after that. She goes back to sleep quickly & easily after nursing during the night. Often starting around 4am her sleep is noisy and restless through the rest of the night, which only seems to bother me!

During the day she seems to either take a long morning nap (around 3 hours), then catnap through the afternoon or do the opposite and catnap through the morning and take a long afternoon nap.

Clothes
She is in 3 month clothes but some of them are getting short on her. It won't be long before we'll need to get out the 6 month sizes.
