Pregnancy Update: Baby #2, 20 weeks

How far along? Picture taken at 20w, 2d

Size of baby? Banana - 10.5oz, 6.5 inches

Weight gain/loss? +6 from pre-pregnancy weight

Maternity clothes? I'm rotating through 2 pairs of maternity jeans. Some pre-pregnancy tops still fit, just depending on the cut. The white shirt in picture is a maternity shirt with a regular tank top underneath.

Stretch marks? No.

Sleep? Sleep has been mostly better in the last few weeks. And the overall exhaustion is much better; I can make it through the day now and usually all the way through helping with MC's bedtime before I go to bed. I mean, don't get me wrong...we're still talking about a 10pm bedtime, but that's better than collapsing in bed when BD walks through the door at 6:30pm as I did for weeks and weeks at the beginning!

Best moment this week? Due to my age, we had a Level 2 ultrasound at the hospital last week. The ultrasound tech spent like 45 minutes with us, looking at every aspect of Baby Sister. It was way more extensive than any of the ultrasounds I had with MC. We looked at all her body parts, and the tech showed us the 4 chambers of her heart, the structure of her brain - all kinds of really cool things. Everything is looking perfect: all pieces and parts accounted for and working, as far as can be seen on ultrasound. We took MC with us to the appointment, but I think we oversold the whole "see pictures of Baby Sister" part. I think she was expecting to see more of a color photograph instead of a weird, smooshy black and white image on a TV screen! Haha! She was interested, especially in seeing Baby Sister's hands, fingers, feet, and toes, but eventually she lost interest and went back to playing games on her iPad. Also, MC is telling people that we are naming the baby either Thomas or Edward, which is pretty entertaining.

Food cravings/aversions? I eat because I have to, but in general eating is just not my thing. Every now and then I think of something that sounds good to me, and either make it or go get it - but a lot of times if I don't (or can't) do it very soon after I think of it, the moment passes, and it doesn't sound good anymore. Even more frustrating is when it sounds good but then doesn't taste good once I'm eating it. And I'm still anti-sweets.

Gender? Girl! We made sure the ultrasound tech confirmed it during our scan, LOL!

Belly button in or out? In.

Movement? I can feel her moving - mostly when I'm lying flat on my back, but BD has not been able to feel her yet.

What I miss? Same answer as last time.

What I'm looking forward to? Getting started on her nursery, although we still haven't decided which bedroom is hers. In non-pregnancy related news, I'm looking forward to the end of pollen season, so that MC and I can play outside again without everything being covered in yellow dust.

How's Mommy feeling? I am freaking out a little about having done nothing so far to prepare for this kiddo, despite the fact that I am halfway through this pregnancy!

How's Daddy feeling? Feeling good, enjoying seeing how excited MC is about Baby Sister.

Milestones? I'm not throwing up anymore, does that count?! Except for a day here and there of true morning sickness, the vomiting seems to mostly be gone. Unfortunately the nausea is still hanging around frequently, so I'm still taking the prescription anti-nausea meds but only once every other day or so.

Easter Fun

We did lots of fun Easter activities this year!

MC and I made "bird nest cookies" together. These were really fun because she could help with every step after I melted the chocolate chips and butterscotch chips.

Our neighbors invited us over for an Easter egg hunt in their yard.

Examining her first ever Peep to try and determine what in the heck it is.

On Saturday before Easter we dyed eggs.

Success! Thumbs up for dyed eggs!

On Sunday morning, she discovered that the Easter Bunny had delivered some treats and goodies in her Easter basket!

Chocolate for breakfast!

Swimming Lessons

MC started private swimming lessons back in September. She has always loved the water, and we've done several parent and tot swim classes, but this has been her first experience being one-on-one in the water with an instructor. She took to her instructor right away, which was somewhat of a surprise coming from our reserved girl. Minus a setback due to the fire alarm going off at the pool during one of her lessons, she has really enjoyed learning to swim. Each week she has progressed, but in January something "clicked" with her and her swimming has improved by leaps and bounds with every lesson. At this point, she is swimming independently underwater for short distances. Last week I took the camera to capture a few shots of her during the lesson.

Waiting patiently for her lesson to begin. Every week when we're getting dressed to head to the pool, she says, "I can't wait for swimming! It's been so long since I've been there!"

Doing "stingrays" - Coach M lines up several swim rings in a row, and MC swims down along the bottom and retrieves them.

Working on breath control and kicking to the surface by jumping off the side of the pool.

Doing "starfish" - back floats. She does this independently as she counts to 5, and most recently she's learned to put her feet down under her and raise her head up to get back to a vertical standing position. (This is in shallow water, obviously.)

Conversations at 3.5

Shortly after we found out we are expecting Baby #2, before we had told anyone or even had the first Dr appt...

MC: I want to be a big brother!
BD: You do?
MC: Yes. I want Mama to have a baby in her tummy.
BD: Why do you want Mama to have a baby in her tummy?
MC: Because I want to tell the baby hi!

BD is recovering from a cold...

MC: What's wrong with Daddy's voice?
LA: He has laryngitis in his throat.
MC: Well, don't swallow it!

We are playing "store". I am on the couch, in the throes of morning sickness...

MC: Okay, I'm ready to check out.
LA: Can you scan your items so I don't have to get up?
MC: No! This isn't self checkout!

She has a temporary tattoo on her foot. After removing her socks and shoes, she discovers that most of the tattoo has rubbed off...

MC: OH NOOOOO!! My left foot is RUINED!!

We are on the couch one early morning, and she sees a squirrel outside sitting on the top of her playset...

MC: OH NOOOO!! There's a chipmunk on my playset and he's eating it!!!
LA: That's a squirrel, and no he's not.
MC: It's okay. I'll just scare him away. (Screaming as loud as she possibly can, still on the couch.) GO AWAY, SQUIRREL. GET OUT OF HERE!! DON'T EAT MY PLAYSET!! (Squirrel happens to jump down.) Oh, good. That worked.

Easter Chicks

Over the weekend we took MC to visit all the baby chicks at one of the local farm/garden stores.

BD took her last year, and she was afraid to touch any of them, but not this year!

Looking closely at the baby chicks with her "bee-noc-clee-urs". When we told her we were going to see the chicks, she immediately ran and got her binoculars to bring with us. I think she was remembering the state fair, where we couldn't see the baby chicks up close.

Awwww...cute little baby chickies! #notcominghomewithus

Pregnancy Update: Baby #2, 16 Weeks

(We had just returned from eating Mexican food when BD took this picture, so this bump is half baby and half burrito - haha!)

How far along? Picture taken at 16w, 6d

Size of baby? Avocado - 4.5 inches long, 3.5 oz

Weight gain/loss? +1 from my pre-pregnancy weight at my OB appointment 2 weeks ago. I'd guess I'm probably up another pound or two since then, especially now that I'm keeping down most of the food I eat.

Maternity clothes? Just one pair of maternity jeans - all of my "comfy" pre-preg pants (yoga, sweats) and pre-preg tops still fit.

Stretch marks? No, I never got them with MC so fingers crossed that I'm that lucky once again!

Sleep? Eh, kind of hit or miss for good sleep at night. Just this week, I have been able to make it through a few days without napping while MC naps. Up until this point, I would pass out on the couch every day until she woke me up by calling for me over the monitor. Usually nap time is when I get the majority of the housework done, so you can just imagine the lovely state of our house.

Best moment this month? We heard baby's heartbeat at my OB appointment a few weeks ago - that is always a fun and reassuring thing at this early stage of pregnancy. This week has been the first week that I have had more "good" days than "bad" days (i.e. less nausea and vomiting), so it is really nice to feel somewhat human again.

Food cravings/aversions? Ugh, food is a huge struggle for me again with this pregnancy. I need to eat about every 2 hours to keep from vomiting but it is so awful to have to basically force feed myself when I am nauseous and feel gross. Nothing ever sounds good and yet I know I have to eat or it will get worse. And I have an anti-sweet tooth - anything with sugar makes me feel terrible. Peanut butter is the sweetest thing I can tolerate, and even that sometimes leaves a gross taste in my mouth.

Gender? I will be 36 when this baby is born, so I am considered to be of "advanced" maternal age. As a result, our insurance will pay for more advanced diagnostic testing at an early stage of pregnancy. Around 11 weeks, I did a blood test (informaSeq) to scan for many of the most common genetic issues and they can also determine the sex of the baby. So we have known for several weeks already that baby is a GIRL!

Belly button in or out? In.

Movement? Some infrequent flutters but no real movement yet.

What I miss? I miss enjoying my food and not having to eat a million times a day. I miss sweets especially. I miss having enough energy to get through the day without being completely wiped out by bedtime. I miss my regular early morning workout/running routine.

What I'm looking forward to? We have an ultrasound coming up in a few weeks. This will be the first time we've seen her on ultrasound since the viability confirmation at 6 weeks!

How's Mommy feeling? Pregnancy is just not a very fun time for me personally. I physically don't feel well; I have mood swings, and I have no energy. I am thrilled to be pregnant, and so thankful that both Baby Sister and I are healthy, but I can honestly say that I am glad this is the last time I will be pregnant.

How's Daddy feeling? [I always ask BD to answer this question himself and then I transcribe his answers here, so I am not putting words in his mouth.] Daddy is doing fine. Daddy is ready to pick out a name. (We have a list of first name contenders and a leading choice for middle name.) And he's ready to decide about which bedroom will Baby Sister's room.

Milestones? Finding out gender, getting clean results back from all the genetic testing, hearing the heartbeat.
