Playing Outside

We have had a strange winter this year - alternating stretches of sunny/warm and snowy/below-freezing. When the weather cooperates, we get outside to play as much as possible.

Recently I brought out the sidewalk chalk for the first time. MC was definitely a fan, and we spent quite a while happily drawing on our driveway.

Another favorite activity is collecting rocks. She also likes to gather rocks and then throw them in the ditch to watch the water splash.

Sometimes the rocks end up in the back of her truck and sometimes the truck is just for pushing.

And swinging is always a big hit. Bonus points if it's sunny enough to need sunglasses!

Pictures!

Here are some recent pics of our girl; these are from late-January and early February 2014. MC is 19 months old in these pics.

Enjoying the guacamole on Taco Thursday.

Confiscated Mama's keys, which are usually off-limits, after we got home from story time at the library. Working on her innocent face, "Oh...these keys? I'm not supposed to have them?? I had no idea!"

Just waking up after her nap one day. Her room gets really good afternoon light, so I was just using her as a test subject for my camera.

Perfecting her curling techniques...Winter Olympics 2030, here we come!

Appropriately dressed for watching Yo Gabba Gabba.

MC's First Dentist Visit

MC had her first visit to the dentist a few weeks ago! I didn't know that February is National Children's Dental Health month, so that was a fun coincidence for her first ever dental check-up! We have a very good friend who is the office manager at one of the pediatric dental offices in Durham, so we chose their office on her recommendation.

Checking out all the toys in the waiting room. They also have a large fish tank that she was interested in.

Getting comfortable in the chair. She didn't actually sit in the chair for the exam, but she had fun playing in it!

Meeting the Dr and getting acquainted. He was excellent with her and really took his time letting her warm up to him.

We did what they called a knee-to-knee exam, where she sat in my lap and leaned back into the Dr's lap.

She wasn't exactly thrilled with the situation but was very calm the whole time, and he was able to do a pretty thorough exam on her.

Her teeth look great, so we'll just continue what we're doing and head back in 6 months for another check-up!

Snow Storm 2014

We had a big winter storm come through last week that dumped about 7 inches of snow and 1/2 inch of ice over two days. The first two days we mostly stayed inside, watching the world turn white outside the windows and hoping we wouldn't lose electricity. (We didn't...whew!)

By the third day we were finally able to really get out and play in it. The sun was shining, and it was really bright so we needed our sunglasses! We started off all bundled up in our heavy winter coats, but it was actually pretty warm out so we quickly shed our outer layers once we got warmed up.

The layer of ice made the snow very slippery and crunchy, so MC wasn't super crazy about playing in it. She didn't like that the ground was unstable under her feet. Not to mention the fact that we don't have any proper snow clothes for her, so when she fell down she got wet.

The slippery ice was really bad for our sweet Kip's old, arthritic knees, so unfortunately he didn't get to come out and play with us this time. He was not very happy about being left in the house, but he just couldn't navigate well enough on the ice to be safe.

Our neighbors came over and brought their sled! It turns out that we have a good driveway for sledding - just enough slope to pick up some speed, but not too steep to send you careening into the ditch or woods across the street.

MC and their daughter, who is the same age, rode the sled a couple of times together, and that was really cute. Then they fought over the beach toys and bouncy ball....ahhh, toddlers...always a joy!

MC was okay with the sledding as long as we held her hand.

I went down a few times with her in my lap and she really loved that the best!

Even BD and I got in on the action! It was fun!

(Yes, BD is in pajama pants and untied boots -- redneck sledding at its finest!)

The neighbors a few houses down built an actual igloo, so we went over to check it out. It was very cool, but MC and I were not brave enough to crawl inside.
