Merry Christmas 2014

Christmas with a toddler was so fun!! She's been telling us that Santa says "Ho Ho Ho! Merry Christmas!" and pointing out pictures of Santa whenever she saw them.

December 25, 2014

She didn't quite get into all the excitement this year, but she did understand that Santa (who lives at the mall, according to her) brought her some presents and put them under the Christmas tree.

The guitar was a huge hit. We have a Laurie Berkner DVD, and anytime we watch it, she pretends to play the guitar just like Laurie. Her Kindermusik teacher also plays the guitar, and she is fascinated with it.

Her other favorite gift was a digital camera. She sees me take a lot of pictures, and she uses several of her toys as a pretend camera, so we figured she would enjoy having a camera of her own. It takes real pictures and has a screen on the back where you can preview the pictures - just like Mama's camera!

Her stocking was filled with art supplies - paint, markers, stamps (all washable ink!)...

a flashlight...

and a book of temporary tattoos!

Santa brought Piper some new toys and an elk antler.

Later in the day we had to improvise a strap for her guitar because her hands aren't yet big enough to hold the guitar and strum.

We had a fun Christmas, and now we're looking forward to a whole week of family fun while Daddy's off work!

Conversations at 2.5

LA: MC, you're my favorite.
MC: No, I'm not...I'm MayMay!

LA: How did you get so cute?
MC: I'm not so cute!
LA: You're not? Why not?!
MC: I'm still wearing my jammies!

Lately she's been very interested in everyone's 'real' names. So we've been talking about how she calls me Mama but my 'real' name is LA, and Daddy's 'real' name is BD.

MC: My name not MC; my name LA.
LA: Your name is LA? Then what's my name?
MC: Your name BD.
LA: Then what is Daddy's name?

MC: What Piper's last name?
LA: It's A_______.
MC: Oh! Just like mine!

MC: (after saying something funny) Dat joke, Mama. MayMay funny girl.

Often I tell her "Everybody ____ sometimes." Fill in the blank with 'falls down' or 'spills milk' or whatever she's upset about at the moment. So recently, we're in the car...

MC: Why we not moving, Mama?
LA: There's a traffic jam - a bunch of cars stopped up here for some reason.
MC: Oh! We moving again!
LA: Yep, all the traffic cleared up.
MC: Everybody clear up sometimes!

Introducing Piper

Our family is 4 paws! We welcomed home Piper from Saving Grace dog rescue last week.

She is a 9 month old Border Collie mix, and we are all smitten with her already! She currently weighs around 30 pounds and is expected to get to about 45 when full grown.

We took her to the Chapel Hill Christmas parade on Saturday, where she met some of our friends and seemed unphased by all of the activity and loud noises.

She is definitely a snuggler and has made herself right at home in our house. Unfortunately, after she'd been home about 24 hours, she started having some GI distress. We weren't sure if it was caused by stress from all the changes in her life or if something was really wrong with her.

On Monday we took her in to our vet, and she was diagnosed with Parvo. At her age, she should have been fully vaccinated against Parvo, but because she is a rescue we assume she has not had proper veterinary care until now.

The vet did not paint a very rosy picture of the situation for us. Parvo is very serious and can have low survival rates. We chose to have her treated inpatient at our vet's office and hoped for the best.

Luckily, our sweet girl is a fighter! The very next morning after we left her at the vet's, their update to us was that she was tolerating the treatments and they were "cautiously optimistic" about her recovery. By the following morning, she was feeling good enough to start some puppy antics: she had chewed through her IV line overnight. After four days at the vet hospital, she was released to come home to us!

She is still not 100% but is clearly feeling much, much better than a few days ago. All signs are pointing to a full recovery for our Piper, and we are so glad that she's a part of our family!

Little Elves Workshop

Last week MC and I participated in a Little Elves Workshop though a local kids' activity place. Each class had 30 minutes of Christmas songs and dancing followed by 3 unique craft stations to make Christmas-themed craft projects. We had so much fun!

Here is a sampling of the craft projects she completed in the class. She also made several other ornaments that I didn't photograph.

Sparkly play-dough star:

Santa with a fluffy white beard:

Shiny Christmas tree with ornaments:

Christmas tree and candy canes painted with scented paint and glitter:

Painting with ice cubes (This one was my favorite, and we will definitely be doing this again at home!)

Star painted with a paint/glue mixture then embelished with sequins:

Christmas Card 2014, Bloopers Edition

Now that our Christmas cards have all been delivered, I'll share all of the funny outtakes that I got while trying to get ONE good picture! Life with a's never dull!!

This one allllllmost made it onto the actual Christmas card. I mean, does anything capture being 2.5 better than this picture?!

Want me to hold the jingle bells? Okay! Want me to look at the camera? Okay! Want me to smile? Okay! Want me to sit in the chair? Nah, I'd rather lean awkwardly on it.

I think it's a great idea to use mini marshmallows to bribe me into cooperating! Just be aware that I'm going to be eating them in 99% of all your pictures!

No, I will not put down the water bottle, thankyouverymuch. I need something to wash down all those marshmallows!

Oh, so you think a toy will help distract me from the tantrum I'm throwing because you won't give me any more marshmallows?

You're right.

Brunch with Santa

We took MC to have brunch with Santa last weekend. Luckily Santa was in another room because MC had no interest in getting anywhere near him! (Just like last year!)

Our same little friend was there this again year, so we got another picture of them together under the Christmas tree. We've known his parents since before any of us had kids, so it's been fun watching them grow up together. T is about 4 months younger than MC, but you'd never know by looking at him! (That's a cinnamon roll in her hand; she held it the entire time we were there!)

Everyone has a lot more hair this year!

She was very interested in the big Christmas tree and all the shiny ornaments, so we got plenty of pictures in front of the tree instead of pictures with Santa!

December 6, 2014

She loved decorating her gingerbread house.

She'd place a few decorations, then eat a few, eat, place, eat...snack 'n craft!

When we got home from brunch, she wanted to go visit our Christmas doggie. She loves to give him hugs and kisses. This is an almost daily occurrence -- can you tell we all miss having a dog in the house?!

Here are some of our other outside decorations. BD also has several of our landscaping trees on either side of the house wrapped in white lights. It looks fantastic at night; I'll try to get some night pics and post soon.

(I just realized I need to do a little rehab on this wreath -- this pic makes it look like one giant mesh poof. You can't even see all the little details on it any more!) All the garland is also wrapped in white lights.

Playing in the Leaves

On the weekends in the fall, BD uses the blower to remove all the leaves from our driveway and grassy yard areas and corral them in the wooded yard areas.

I had the idea for these shots, thinking it would be fun to do each year as MC grows. I must admit, however, that these did not turn out quite as Pinterest-worthy as I imagined them. I guess my photography skills aren't quite as developed as my imagination!

BD also blows up a big pile of leaves for her to jump in, and she loves it!
