Conversations, Pregnancy Edition

Scene: in the kitchen, making BLTs for supper

LA: Is bacon real meat?
BD: Ummmm, I'm not sure I understand your question?
LA: Well, I just meant is it a cut of meat or is it processed meat, like hot dogs.
BD: Yeah. It's a cut of meat. It comes from a pig.
LA: So, there is a part of a pig called the bacon?
BD: You know what? I think Poppy Seed is going to be really smart. Because apparently you are giving her all your brains.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Scene: in the laundry room, folding a load of Poppy Seed's clothes

BD: WOW. We have a dryer-full of baby clothes.
LA: Yep.
BD: I mean, we're going to have a baby! Soon!
LA: Is this just now dawning on you?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Scene: driving home from the last prepared childbirth class

LA: I know they call it the 'miracle of birth' but I think it's a little bit of miracle and a whole lot of gross.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Scene: watching my belly jump and twitch from Poppy Seed's movement

BD: I think she's ready to come out. You just tell her she needs to stay put for a few more weeks!
LA: Poppy Seed, you have to stay put for a little longer.
Poppy Seed: *kick* *kick* *KICK*
BD: I think she heard you!

Oatmeal Lemon Cream Bars

I know it's hard to believe that I am actually watching my sugar intake like I claim to be, especially if you make and try this recipe for yourself. I admit I have had one small square of these bars, and then I have tried to forget that they exist...they are so good, I could eat the entire pan by myself. Luckily, BD likes lemon desserts, so he has put a big dent in these by himself.

Oatmeal Lemon Cream Bars

All you need is oatmeal cookie mix, sweetened condensed milk, butter, a lemon (that's lemon zest in the ramekin and lemon juice in the measuring cup), and an egg.

Cut the butter into the cookie dough with a fork and then add the egg. The dough will be really crumbly and sticky.

This is a layered bar, so you press half of the cookie dough mixture into the bottom of an 8" square pan and bake for 15 minutes.

While the bottom layer is baking, mix up the lemon cream filling: sweetened condensed milk, lemon juice, and zest. I didn't get the full 1/4 cup of juice that it calls for in the recipe from the lemon; I just filled in the rest with bottled lemon juice I had in the fridge. (Tip: If you press and roll the lemon on the counter before squeezing it, you'll get more juice!)

After the bottom layer is pre-baked, you spread the lemon mixture and then sprinkle the rest of the cookie dough on top. I forgot to snap a pre-oven assembled picture but here's a shot of it in the oven.

Here is it, fresh out of the oven, golden brown on top, and smelling like warm oatmeal cookies. YUM!

BD sliced it before it was all the way cooled, so it was a little crumbly, but you can see the layers.

Week 32 Poppy Seed Update

How far along? Picture taken at 32 weeks, 6 days.

Size of baby? Approximately 3lbs and 16" long this week.

Weight gain/loss? +14

Maternity clothes? Yep.

Stretch marks? None so far!

Sleep? Eh. Sleep is getting kind of hit or miss for me. I seem to have a night or two of poor sleep followed by a night of good sleep, which is enough to keep me going for now. On the poor sleep nights I either toss and turn a lot or wake up in the wee hours and can't get back to sleep. I ordered a light for my Kindle and that has been helpful - at least I can stay in bed and read when I can't sleep.

Best moment this week? Since I'm doing these posts monthly instead of weekly, I'll hit the highlights of the whole month, and there have been a lot!
  • We finished our prepared childbirth classes. They were interesting and informative, and we learned most of what I was hoping to learn. We've also taken an infant CPR class and a breastfeeding class. All we have left at this point is to tour the maternity ward at the hospital.
  • We had a lovely baby shower hosted by two of my close friends. My mom and sister, and BD's mom and stepmom were all able to come up for the shower, so that was really nice. We got a lot of really great stuff for Poppy Seed.
  • I passed the 3-hr glucose test, thank goodness!!
  • We have ordered her carseat, and it should be here next week. That was the last of the "must-haves" before she arrives. There is plenty more I'd like to get done, of course - but if she were to come early we have the immediate necessities.
Food cravings/aversions? Since the gestational diabetes scare, I've been watching my sugar intake pretty closely. I'm not being a total Nazi about it, but I have cut way way back. I discovered that less sugar in my diet actually makes me feel better and gives me more energy, so cutting back hasn't been very difficult at all. I've also started to have a little bit of acid reflux, so I'm trying to avoid foods that aggravate it.

Gender? Girl!

Belly button in or out? Neither - it's flat.

Movement? Yes, lots of movement. Earlier this week, before we got out of bed for the day, BD was lying with his arm around me and his hand on my belly. She did her signature move which I refer to as the "tuck and roll somersault" - where she starts at my rib cage and rolls all the way down the length of my belly. BD has felt and seen her move quite a lot, but he was shocked at that movement!

What I miss? I kind of just miss not being pregnant, if that makes any sense. I think I've been pretty open about the fact that pregancy has not been my favorite state of being. I am thankful to be pregnant and to have had a healthy pregnancy overall, but you will not catch me wearing an I-Heart-Being-Pregnant t-shirt anytime soon.

What I'm looking forward to? We still have 2 more showers coming up, so I'm excited about those. And I'm starting to think more about her birth as we get closer; I am looking forward to meeting her and getting to know her.

How's Mommy feeling? Pretty good most days, except for the occasional ache and pain or annoying pregnancy symptom.

Milestones? We've celebrated our 9th wedding anniversary and my 32nd birthday in the last month. I know those aren't really baby related, but it's all I can think of right now!
