Kip's Tale: The Surgery

WARNING! THERE ARE GRAPHIC IMAGES IN THIS POST!

Kip had his tibial plateau leveling osteotomy (TPLO) surgery on New Year's Eve by Dr. Lee at Veterinary Speciality Hospital in North Raleigh.

The details of a TPLO surgery are complicated and are better explained by a vet. Basically, in layman's terms, it involves installing a metal plate to help stabilize the knee without disturbing the integrity of the joint.

Kip did well throughout the surgery and overnight in ICU. We brought him home about 1:30 this afternoon. He ate some food and has been sleeping on his bed for most of the afternoon.

His whole left leg is shaved; the incision is on the inside of his leg and is about 8 inches long.

Below are the pictures -- taken about 24 hours after the surgery.

Pictures aren't so bad - they're too small to show the gruesome details :) What an exciting New Year's Eve for Kip! I wish him a swift recovery. Not sure how old he is, but he looks great. The ramps look wonderful, too! You two are so crafty. Love the barrels by the ramp to keep him from "skipping" it. That is SO Zoe. Went through the same thing with the stairs I bought her for getting up to her bed on the trunk at the foot of mine.
Love the new blog design and profile pic, too. Happy New Year!!!

Poor Kip! I remember when you got him. Yes, he is your baby and I hope he gets better soon!
